Six cities, one bilingual point of contact
Families searching for a home in this part of Los Angeles County are often comparing several cities at once: San Marino against La Cañada Flintridge, Pasadena against Glendale, or the Hollywood Hills against a more established San Gabriel Valley-adjacent suburb. Burbank
Schools: Burbank Unified School District serves the city directly and, like neighboring districts, provides English Learner (EL) support services for students who speak a language other than English at home.
Community: Burbank sits minutes from the Chinese and Taiwanese community hubs of the San Gabriel Valley and from Glendale's own Chinese and Korean markets and restaurants, so families do not have to give up easy access to familiar groceries and community life to live here.
Housing fit: Housing ranges from post-war single-family homes to condos and hillside view homes, including single-level layouts and larger lots that can accommodate an ADU for a multi-generational household.
Glendale
Schools: Glendale Unified School District covers the city and, in a district with a large immigrant population, offers English Learner support for students still building English proficiency.
Community: Glendale has long been home to sizable Armenian, Korean, and other immigrant communities, with restaurants and markets reflecting that mix, and it borders Burbank and the San Gabriel Valley's larger Chinese and Taiwanese community centers.
Housing fit: Condo and townhome living is common in the flatter areas, while the Verdugo Woodlands and hillside neighborhoods offer larger single-family homes, some with the separate living space multi-generational families look for.
Pasadena
Schools: Pasadena Unified School District serves the city and provides English Learner support services for students from non-English-speaking households.
Community: Pasadena has one of the region's oldest Chinese-American communities and is home to the USC Pacific Asia Museum, which focuses on the art, history and culture of Asia and the Pacific Islands; it also sits close to the larger San Gabriel Valley community hubs a short drive east.
Housing fit: Craftsman and period-revival homes sit alongside newer condos near Old Pasadena and South Lake, with some larger properties well suited to extended families needing separate living areas.
San Marino
Schools: San Marino Unified School District is a small, city-specific district that many families research closely, including its approach to supporting English Learners.
Community: San Marino has one of the San Gabriel Valley's longest-established Chinese-American communities and is home to the Huntington's Liu Fang Yuan, a 15-acre classical-style Chinese garden inspired by the gardens of Suzhou; it also sits minutes from San Gabriel Square and the restaurants and markets of San Gabriel and Alhambra.
Housing fit: Housing is almost entirely large-lot single-family homes, which suits families who want room for grandparents, adult children, and grandchildren to share a property comfortably.
La Cañada Flintridge
